Quick Selection

All checkbox settings have shortcut keys associated with them so that you can toggle them on or off with a single keypress while the Settings editor is open. The underlined character in the checkbox’s description indicates which key to press.

Sample Citations

A sample legislation and case citation are each provided at the top of the Settings window, which will update to reflect what citations will look like as you change settings.

The sample citations do not reflect settings for Microsoft Word Features and Email Features. They also do not reflect the blue, underlined formatting that accompanies standard hyperlinks.

General

Include URL

Check this box for citations to include the document url.

Include BOA Reference

Check this box to include reference text indicating the tab and page number of the document in your book of authorities.

Text

There are two text boxes – one before and one after the tab number. You can type anything here and it will be included in the citation.

Tab Numbers

The tab number is not automatically populated since you may add more documents to your book of authorities.

Instead, the first time you include a citation in a Microsoft Word document, “##” is written as a placeholder, marked as a bookmark, and highlighted in turquoise. Subsequent references to that document are not highlighted.

When your submissions are complete, and tab numbers are finalized, locate each of the turquoise-highlighted hashtags, click between the two hashtags and enter then tab number. Delete the hashtags surrounding the number and remove the highlighting. Then select the entire document (Control + A) and press F9. All of the subsequent tab references will be automatically updated to reflect the tab numbers inputted for each document.

Bold BOA Reference

Check this box to make the BOA reference text bold.

Period at End

Check this box to include a period at the end of each citation.

Cases

Use 2 Parallel Citations

Check this box to use two parallel citations, if available.

Include Tribunal Indicator

Check this box to include the abbreviation for the court or tribunal in parenthesis after any parallel citations, if available.

Pinpoints

Ask for Pinpoint

Check this box to be asked for a pinpoint citation before each citation is written.

When the pinpoint citation window appears after pressing Control + Shift + V or Control + Space, you can press Enter or click OK without inputting a number to write the citation without a pinpoint reference. Press Control twice quickly or Escape or click Cancel to cancel writing the citation.

You can enter as many pinpoint references as you like and include subsections, paragraphs and other subdivisions. You can separate pinpoints with words or other characters (eg. “4, 12-13 & 15” or “5(2)(g)(iii) & 7.01(1)”).

Pinpoint Indicator Words

You can change the text which precedes the pinpoint number for each type of pinpoint reference.

Pinpoint Types

LegalCite supports five types of pinpoint references: 1. Paragraph 2. Page 3. Section 4. Article 5. Rule

Editing Pinpoint Types

LegalCite automatically detects the pinpoint type for each document when it is first grabbed.

You can edit the pinpoint type by clicking the document’s Edit button in the Book of Authorities.

Pluralizing

LegalCite detects when you enter multiple pinpoint references and pluralizes the text by adding an “s” to end of the final word with 3 exceptions 1. “at” is not modified 2. “P” and “p” turn to “PP” and “pp” respectively 3. “R” and “r” turn to “RR” and “rr” respectively

Display

Controls

Choose whether you want help and instructions to tell you about visual, keyboard, or advanced controls.

Select when LegalCite Button Appears

Select when you want the LegalCite button to appear. It will only appear in word processors and email after you have grabbed a document.

To make the LegalCite button appear in legal databases that are not listed (such as LexisNexis), check "Any other sites with ' v. ' and ' Act, ' in the title".

Quotes

Format

There are three quote formats that can be used anywhere. In Microsoft Word, footnotes can also be used. The formats are as follows:

Inline Citation

“Quote” (Citation)

Citation on New Line

“Quote”

Citation

Citation Before Quote

Citation: “Quote”

Footnote Citation

“Quote”1

__________

Citation

Block Quotes

You can decide the maximum length (in characters) a quote can be before it is treated as a block quote.

Regular quotes are surrounded by quotation marks, and any double quotation marks within the quoted text are substituted for single quotation marks. None of these changes are made for block quotes.

Footnotes

Use Ibid in Footnotes

Check this box for immediately repeated references to the same document to include an ibid reference instead of the full citation.

Use Supra in Footnotes

Check this box for repeat references to the same document to include a supra reference instead of the full citation.

Please note that enabling this setting this may substantially slow down citation-writing in documents with many footnotes (eg. more than 50) since LegalCite needs to check every footnote for a match each time you write a citation.

Short Title

You can create a short form title in square brackets in the initial citation, and LegalCite will use that title instead of the full title in supra references

Footnote Reference Number

The footnote number is a hyperlink to the location in the document of the original footnote with the full citation.

Updating Reference Numbers

Once your document is complete, select all footnote text (Control + A) and press F9 to update the references.

Hyperlinks

Hyperlink Titles

Check this box to make the document titles hyperlinks.

Hyperlink Titles Discreetly

Check this box to remove the underline and blue colour from title hyperlinks.

Hyperlink Case's First Parallel Citation

Check this box to make the first parallel citation on a case a hyperlink.

Hyperlink Legislation Citation

Check this box to make the citation proper for legislation and regulations a hyperlink.

Hyperlink Secondary Source Citation

Check this box to make the citation proper for secondary sources a hyperlink.

Hyperlink Pinpoints

Check this box to make each pinpoint reference number a hyperlink directly to the location in the document.

Pinpoint hyperlinks are not supported by all websites, including many older cases or cases without paragraph numbers on CanLII.
